In this article, we’ll explore various methods to troubleshoot and fix the PS4 won’t connect to WiFi problem. Whether you’ve experienced this in the past or are currently facing the issue, these solutions should help you get back online.

Why Won’t My PS4 Connect to WiFi?

Several factors can contribute to your PS4’s connectivity issues. Here are some common reasons:

  1. Lost Internet Connection:
  • Ensure that your WiFi network has a stable internet connection.
  1. Incorrect WiFi Credentials:
  • Verify that the WiFi username and password entered on your PS4 match the router’s settings.
  1. PSN Network Status:
  • Check if the PlayStation Network (PSN) is online, as connectivity issues may arise during maintenance or outages.
  1. DNS Settings Misconfiguration:
  • Ensure that the DNS settings on your PS4 are correctly configured.
  1. Weak WiFi Signal:
  • If your PS4 is far from the router or experiences a weak signal, consider improving the signal strength.
  1. Malfunctioned Console:
  • In rare cases, a malfunction in your PS4 hardware could be causing the connectivity problem.
  1. Outdated System Firmware:
  • Make sure your PS4 has the latest system firmware installed.

How to Connect Your PS4 to WiFi

Follow these simple steps to connect your PS4 to WiFi:

  1. Navigate to Settings and then select Network.
  2. Choose Set Up Internet Connection.
  3. Opt for either Wi-Fi or a LAN (Ethernet) cable and select Custom.
  4. Set IP Address to Automatic and DHCP to Do not specify.
  5. In DNS server settings, choose Manual and enter the preferred DNS in the Primary and Secondary DNS settings (e.g., Primary DNS: 8.8.8.8, Secondary DNS: 8.8.4.4).
  6. Add MTU and click Next to complete the connection.

Solutions to Fix PS4 Won’t Connect to WiFi Error

1. Restart Your PlayStation and Router:

  • Sometimes a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Power off both your PS4 and router, wait for a few minutes, and then power them back on.

2. Change Router Settings:

  • Access your router’s admin settings and try changing your network SSID name, enabling/disabling encryption, or removing the WiFi password. Restart the router and check if the PS4 connects.

3. Use a Wired LAN Cable:

  • If WiFi issues persist, consider using a LAN cable for a direct, more stable connection.

4. Solve Endless Proxy Loop (CE-33986-9):

  • Navigate to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Wi-Fi > Custom. Configure settings manually and set DNS to Primary: 8.8.8.8, Secondary: 8.8.4.4. Test the internet connection.

5. Contact Your ISP or PlayStation Support:

  • If the problem persists, reach out to your Internet Service Provider (ISP) or PlayStation Support for assistance.

6. Buy WiFi Booster or Range Extender:

  • Consider investing in a WiFi booster or range extender to enhance your network signal.

7. Check for Proxy Settings:

  • Ensure you are not using a proxy server in PS4 WiFi settings, as this can lead to connectivity issues.

8. Update System Firmware:

  • Verify that your PS4 has the latest system firmware installed to benefit from optimizations and bug fixes.

Remember, each solution is dependent on the specific circumstances, and trying multiple methods may be necessary to resolve the PS4 won’t connect to WiFi error. If all else fails, detailed troubleshooting with PlayStation Support or your ISP may be required.

    1. Mine either. Restarted everything including back to the original update. Cannot even get it back to the home screen I’m stuck on the start up…

  1. Here it is 01/11/19 and the above mentioned steps didn’t work for mine. And its brand new just came in the mail yesterday. It was shipped with 6.0.2 and the steps above didn’t work. Updated it to 6.2.0 and nothing yet again. Same error every time regardless of if I try wifi or lan

    1. have you tried using other wifi network or other isp try using mobile network if you can connect with other network contact your isp for the solution 🙂 .

    2. My PS4 won’t connect it keeps saying cannot connect to server within time limit it gives the CE 33986 9

  3. I did all these steps and it still won’t connect. I can’t use a lan cable because it’s a family wifi router and my mam usually works from home. My internet works on my phone and laptop and all the other devices in the house but not the ps4. And yes I did check for any new updates for games and the system. 1/2/19

    1. you tried using mobile hotspot too? If that’s the case then you should contact your isp and say them to change your ip address if you can do it.

  4. If the above DNS don’t work, one that worked for mine is primary 4.2.2.1 and secondary 4.2.2.6
Haven’t seen those except for one place. It worked and gave me the wifi speeds I needed. The others made my wifi work but only gave me 400kbs on a 400mb internet connection. Lol.

  5. After putting in the password it goes straight to the error of cannot connect within time limit. I get no option to change DNS

  6. This doesn’t work on my ps4 and yes I’ve used two different routers at different houses and I just bought the ps4 not too long ago and it never connects to internet neither WiFi or Cable

  7. Came online and ps4 got the endless proxy loop despite nothing changing on my network. Set the DNS numbers suggest. Not only did it work, but I went from NAT type 3 to type 2. You’re a good kid.

  8. I have a solution. Most of the time my PS4 Pro won’t identity my Wireless Network.
    I do following steps:
1)Go to Modem admin section. Mine address is: http://192.10.1.1
    2) Go to Security
Now here is the trick. Use any method
    1) Change your Network SSID name and restart router
    2) Enable or Disable Encryption
    3) Remove Password of your wifi by selecting option ‘Open’

By doing any of the above steps my PS4 Pro always recognizes my Wifi Connection.

    Try, and share your thoughts.

    Thanks

  9. Brand new PS4 opened last weekend. I have tried everything listed above and on other websites but still cant connect. I have a Xbox One, Xbox 360, and a Wii all in the same location and they connect fine with now issues. I use an extender in the room so every device including the PS4 shows 100% signal strength. I’m about to take this POS back to Game Stop and get my money back!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. Sony and Playstation are complete TRASH when it comes to connecting to the internet! This is why they need Microsoft help with their online service!

  12. We have this problem. I am watching shows on my PS4 and suddenly it wont connect to the internet. I restored to default settings and it still will not connect. We swapped out our Modem/Router combo. The PS4 worked for a day and then we have the same problems. Now, my wifi speed is supposed to be around 300 but sometimes it is only around 120. I am wondering if this is the issue, that the damn internet company is purposefully reducing the download speeds so that we will buy the next package. Now, here’s the twist. My computer wifi is working fine, but I cannot access Hulu or Vudu there as well.

  13. Hold down on the power off button until you hear three beeps then do the same when you’re turning it back on it works for me but I don’t know if it’s going to work for you

  14. Ok just yesterday I was online on my ps4 using my hotspot from my iPad. My son also used his hotspot yesterday at a different time. Today neither of us could connect using the WiFi hotspots. They work on other devices….just the dang ps4 is being a pain. Explain that! Sounds like he WiFi card?
